Houston is a vibrant city with a thriving arts and entertainment culture. In order to grow our local film and television production industry, we need a robust, well-trained crew base to support full-scale, studio-level productions. HAP is launching a new mentorship program which will collaborate with colleges and film organizations to identify local up-and-coming talent and offer them opportunities to shadow seasoned professionals and gain valuable on-set experience. This mentorship provide aspiring crew people with the necessary training and experience to build sustainable careers in the production industry in Houston.
HAP’s Mentorship Program is an educational, hands-on opportunity that provide unique on-set experience in the field of media production and post production for undergraduate and graduate students (age 18 and up). Trainees will be paired with an experienced crew person in their field of interest.
- Spend two days on-set observing production procedures and safety measures.
- Work alongside a mentor in your chosen production craft.
- Follow daily instructions from producers, director and department head.
- Complete after action reviews to determine minimum thresholds have been met.
- Basic understanding of film set operations.
- Strong grasp of the craft you are pursuing and how it contributes to the overall production.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively as a member of a team in a high pressure environment.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and creative applications.
- Passion for storytelling and creative expression through the art of film.
- Agree to allow HAP to use your image and name in marketing of the program.
- Three days of paid, hands-on experience on a professional production (i.e. feature film, tv show, commercial or video game)
- Apprentice under an industry professional.
- Build a network of industry contacts and connections.
- Shadow experienced crew member (aka “mentor”) for two 12-hour days on a professional set.
- Apprentice under the mentor on a professional set for a minimum of three 12-hour days.
- Complete after action review by Houston Association of Producers
- Meet minimum safety and operational benchmarks.
Application Window: August 15 – September 30
Interview of Mentees: October 5-25
Notification of Selected Mentees: October 29
Program Starts: January, 2026
PLEASE NOTE: In addition to the application, you will need to submit a copy of your CV, resume or portfolio as well as a letter of recommendation from your professor or a professional colleague explaining why you would be a good candidate for our mentorship program.
